Denmark Reports Fresh Drone Sightings Over Military Bases Amid Security Concerns

Copenhagen: Denmark has reported new drone sightings overnight above its military installations, including Karup Air Base, intensifying concerns over what authorities describe as hybrid attacks against critical infrastructure.

The Danish Armed Forces confirmed that drones were observed for hours over Karup, one of the country’s largest military bases. Police also indicated sightings near other military sites. This follows a week of repeated disruptions, including the temporary closure of Copenhagen Airport and several regional airports due to suspected drone activity.

Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen admitted that Denmark lacks adequate counter-drone systems capable of neutralizing small and stealthy aircraft. In response, the government is considering new legislation that would allow critical infrastructure operators to act against drones.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen previously labeled the Copenhagen Airport shutdown “the most serious attack on Danish infrastructure to date.”

Authorities believe the incursions are systematic and coordinated, though no group or state has claimed responsibility. Analysts have suggested the activity may be part of a broader hybrid warfare strategy aimed at testing defenses and unsettling the public.

Sweden has already offered Denmark anti-drone equipment ahead of a major EU summit scheduled to take place in Copenhagen. Meanwhile, opposition parties have accused the government of a security lapse, while public polls show growing unease among Danish citizens.

Although suspicion has fallen on Russia, officials have not provided evidence linking the incursions to any specific actor. Denmark has ruled out invoking NATO’s Article 4 for now, instead opting to strengthen its own security measures and coordinate with European allies.

The wave of drone sightings has raised urgent questions about the vulnerability of European infrastructure and the need for stronger regional defenses against emerging threats.
