Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has expressed deep grief over the tragic stampede at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay’s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, which claimed at least 39 lives. In a heartfelt message, the Chief Minister conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and extended solidarity with the people of Tamil Nadu during this moment of collective mourning.
Taking to Facebook, Pinarayi Vijayan described the incident as “extremely sad” and said that the magnitude of the loss is heartbreaking. “The incident in which many people lost their lives and several others were injured during a rally in Karur is extremely tragic. I convey my deepest sorrow and condolences to the families who have lost their dear ones,” he wrote.
In his statement, Vijayan also revealed that he has reached out to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, offering Kerala’s support if required. “I have written to Chief Minister Stalin, assuring all possible help if the situation demands. In this difficult hour, Kerala stands by Tamil Nadu,” the Chief Minister said.
The death toll from the stampede at Vijay’s rally has now risen to 39, according to official figures, with several more undergoing treatment in hospitals. The tragedy occurred when a massive crowd of over 30,000 supporters gathered at Karur to listen to the TVK leader. Overcrowding and lack of adequate crowd management triggered panic, leading to a deadly crush.
The Karur incident has triggered reactions across political, social, and cultural spheres. Leaders from various states have expressed solidarity with Tamil Nadu, terming the loss of lives “avoidable and heartbreaking.” With public anger mounting, questions are being raised over crowd control measures and the responsibility of political organizers during mass gatherings.
By extending condolences and offering aid, Pinarayi Vijayan has joined a chorus of voices standing in support of Tamil Nadu in this hour of crisis. His message not only underscores regional solidarity but also highlights the need for coordinated state-level cooperation during large-scale disasters.
As investigations continue and families grieve, the Karur tragedy remains a grim reminder of the importance of safety preparedness in public events, where political enthusiasm must never outweigh human lives.
