Global pressure grows on Israel over Gaza war

Jerusalem: Israel is encountering heightened international pressure on multiple fronts as the conflict in Gaza continues, with the effects extending into diplomacy, trade, sports, and culture.

The European Commission has proposed suspending certain trade concessions granted under the EU–Israel Association Agreement, citing concerns over human rights provisions.

If adopted by EU member states, the move would impact billions of euros in Israeli exports to Europe, Israel’s largest trading partner. Some European nations have also announced partial arms embargoes, while Norway’s sovereign wealth fund has reduced certain investments connected to Israel.Approval of EU measures, however, remains subject to debate among member governments, with some calling for a cautious approach.

On the cultural stage, broadcasters in Ireland, the Netherlands, and Spain have said they may not participate in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest if Israel is included, with a final decision expected later this year. In the arts, festivals in Belgium and other countries have postponed or canceled performances involving Israeli conductors or artists, reflecting ongoing sensitivities.

Sports organizations are also engaged in discussions. UEFA is set to deliberate on whether Israel’s football teams should continue in European competitions, following calls by the Turkish Football Federation for suspension. Protests have disrupted some international cycling events where Israeli teams were scheduled to compete, prompting organizers to reconsider participation in certain races.

Israeli officials have acknowledged the evolving situation. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the country may need to strengthen its defense sector and adapt its economy to ensure long-term resilience. Israeli broadcasters and cultural representatives, meanwhile, have emphasized that international events such as Eurovision should remain platforms for unity rather than division.

As deliberations continue in European institutions, sporting bodies, and cultural organizations, Israel remains actively engaged with its allies while preparing for potential shifts in its global relationships.
