Singapore Population Reaches Record 6.11 Million Driven by Foreign Workers

Singapore: Singapore's population has hit a new record of 6.11 million as of June 2025, marking a 1.2% increase from the previous year. The growth has been largely fueled by a 2.7% rise in foreign workers, bringing their total to 1.91 million. Key sectors contributing to this increase include construction, marine shipyards, processing industries, and domestic work. These workers are playing a crucial role in major infrastructure projects such as the development of Changi Terminal 5 and the expansion of housing supply.

Meanwhile, the resident citizen population grew modestly by 0.7% to 3.66 million, and the number of permanent residents remained steady at 0.54 million. Despite the influx of foreign labor, Singapore's unemployment rate stayed low at 2% in June, although job vacancies have declined amid concerns over a potential economic slowdown.

The significant rise in foreign workers has reignited debates in Singapore over job security and the cost of living. The situation recalls public protests in 2013 against proposed immigration increases, which aimed to boost the population to 6.9 million by 2030. The government continues to balance economic growth with public sentiment on immigration.
