Velankanni Relic Exhibition Attracts Over 6 Lakh Devotees in Three Days

Velankanni: The Velankanni Marian Basilica in Tamil Nadu has drawn tens of thousands of devotees to a remarkable exhibition of 1,500 sacred relics of saints, inaugurated on October 1 as part of the ongoing Jubilee Year celebrations. Within just three days, over six lakh pilgrims visited the exhibition, engaging in heartfelt veneration and prayer.

The exhibition was inaugurated under the guidance of Bishop T. Sagayaraj of the Thanjavur Diocese. The ceremonial transfer of the relics from the main altar to the Morning Star Church was conducted by Basilica Rector Fr. C. Irudayaraj, with assistance from Fr. Arputharaj, Vice Rector, who oversaw the organisation of the event.

Highlighting the spiritual impact of the exhibition, Bishop Louis Mascarenhas of Allahabad, who personally attended, remarked, “This exhibition is a spiritual need of our times. It is one of the most profound experiences of my life, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to witness it.”

The exhibition was organised by the Carlo Acutis Foundation, led by Fr. Ephrem Kunnappilly, with support from his father, Mr. Joyce Aprem, President, and Mr. Ajeesh Benny Kooran, Vice President. The Foundation, known for promoting devotion through relic exhibitions, has previously conducted similar expositions in 88 locations worldwide, earning international acclaim for fostering faith and spiritual engagement among the faithful.

Pilgrims from across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states thronged the Basilica, spending hours in prayer and reflection before the relics. Many expressed that witnessing the relics firsthand deepened their spiritual connection and inspired a renewed sense of devotion.

The Velankanni exhibition not only celebrates the legacy of the saints but also reflects the Church’s efforts to make the treasures of faith accessible to the faithful, creating an atmosphere of reverence, contemplation, and unity.
