Storm Amy Leaves Thousands Without Power as Northern Ireland Battles Severe Weather

Ireland: Northern Ireland and parts of the Republic of Ireland are facing widespread disruption as Storm Amy continues to batter the region. Thousands of homes remain without electricity, travel is severely affected, and emergency services are working around the clock to restore normalcy.

In Northern Ireland, approximately 22,000 properties are still without power, down from a peak of 40,000 at the height of the storm. Utility crews are working tirelessly to restore electricity, with full service expected in some areas by Sunday or Monday. In the Republic of Ireland, over 87,000 customers are affected, primarily in counties Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon, Leitrim, Cavan, and Donegal. Restoration efforts are ongoing, though some regions may experience prolonged outages.

The storm has brought strong winds, with gusts reaching up to 92 mph in Magilligan, County Londonderry, and even higher speeds reported in parts of Britain. Heavy rainfall has caused localized flooding, with roads such as the N59 near Kylemore Abbey in Galway rendered impassable.

Travel disruptions are widespread. Rail services in Northern Ireland remain largely suspended, with a phased resumption expected from midday. At Dublin Airport, at least 115 flights were cancelled, with an additional 18 diverted. Road travel has also been affected, with fallen trees and debris causing closures, including parts of the M1 motorway.

Weather authorities have issued ongoing warnings. While a yellow-level rain warning has expired, a Status Yellow wind warning remains in effect until midnight. Tragically, a man in his 40s lost his life in County Donegal due to weather-related incidents.

Residents are advised to stay updated on power restoration and travel information through official channels, including NIE Networks and ESB Networks, and to take all necessary precautions until the storm passes.
