‘Live the Gospel Authentically,’ Urges Bhopal Archbishop at St. Francis of Assisi Feast

Bhopal: The Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi was celebrated with great fervour and devotion at the St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral Church in Bhopal, uniting hundreds of faithful in a day of prayer, song, and thanksgiving. The solemn Holy Eucharist, led by Archbishop A.A.S. Duraiaraj SVD, stood as a moving tribute to the life and legacy of the beloved patron saint of peace and simplicity.

During his homily, Archbishop Duraiaraj reflected on Saint Francis’s radical embrace of poverty, humility, and deep communion with creation. He described the saint as “a living Gospel,” whose life continues to challenge believers to practice faith through authentic action and compassionate service. The Archbishop emphasised that in a world marked by consumerism and environmental degradation, Saint Francis’s message remains profoundly relevant calling humanity to live harmoniously with nature and in solidarity with the marginalized.

Drawing inspiration from the Canticle of the Sun, Archbishop Duraiaraj underscored that every element of creation reflects divine love. He urged the faithful to be mindful stewards of the planet, caring for the environment as a sacred trust rather than exploiting it for personal gain. He also invited everyone to embody Saint Francis’s spirit of peace and fraternity, fostering unity in families and communities.

The Cathedral, beautifully decorated with natural floral arrangements, echoed the saint’s love for God’s creation. The atmosphere was filled with hymns of praise and gratitude as the faithful joined in the celebration, renewing their commitment to Gospel values. At the end of the Mass, Archbishop Duraiaraj imparted a special blessing, invoking Saint Francis’s intercession for peace, health, and harmony across all families.

As the congregation dispersed, the faithful carried home a renewed spiritual conviction to live the Gospel authentically, embrace simplicity, serve the poor, and protect creation, continuing the mission of Saint Francis as true instruments of God’s peace.
