Afghanistan Neighbors Reject U.S. Plan to Retake Bagram Base

Bagram: Regional powers surrounding Afghanistan have collectively opposed former U.S. President Donald Trump's proposal to regain control of the Bagram military base near Kabul. This position was expressed during the recent "Moscow Format" meeting on Afghanistan, which brought together representatives from India, Pakistan, China, Russia, Iran, and several Central Asian nations.

In a joint statement, the countries criticized any foreign military deployments in Afghanistan or its neighboring states, sending a clear message against the idea of a U.S. return to Bagram. Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government also reaffirmed its stance, with Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi emphasizing the country’s commitment to maintaining its sovereignty and rejecting foreign military presence.

Bagram, a key U.S. military installation until the 2021 troop withdrawal, has drawn attention due to Trump’s insistence on reclaiming it. However, U.S. officials have expressed skepticism, warning that retaking the base could require a large-scale military operation involving over 10,000 troops and advanced defense systems, effectively resembling a new invasion.

Meanwhile, the U.S. continues discussions with the Taliban on the possibility of re-establishing a limited military presence at Bagram for counterterrorism purposes. These talks, led by U.S. Special Envoy Adam Boehler, also cover broader issues such as potential prisoner exchanges and economic agreements, signaling a more pragmatic approach to engagement with the Taliban.

The situation remains dynamic, with ongoing diplomatic efforts amid strong regional opposition and internal debates within the U.S. administration over the feasibility and risks of returning to Bagram.
