Kinshasa: Eastern Congo is facing a deepening healthcare emergency, with nearly 90 percent of clinics in North and South Kivu provinces running out of essential medicines. A recent survey conducted by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) reveals that ongoing conflict, looting, and disrupted supply chains have left many health facilities struggling to provide care. Staff shortages affect around 40 percent of clinics, and 13 percent are completely nonfunctional, leaving thousands of residents at risk.
The situation has worsened following a major offensive by the M23 rebel group earlier this year, which resulted in thousands of deaths and the seizure of Goma. Since January 2025, medical supply shortages have been persistent, and patients are experiencing delays in treatment for diseases such as malaria, HIV, and tuberculosis. The ICRC is calling on all parties to allow safe access for healthcare workers and address the growing humanitarian emergency.
Adding to the crisis, the Democratic Republic of Congo is battling a new Ebola outbreak. First reported in September 2025 in Bulape, the outbreak has already resulted in 48 confirmed and probable cases, with 31 deaths. The main treatment center in Bulape is operating at 119 percent capacity. The World Health Organization has begun vaccinating frontline workers and close contacts, but rapid intervention is critical to prevent the virus from spreading to vulnerable communities.
The healthcare emergency is further compounded by the disruption of international aid. In early 2025, a USAID contract to supply 100,000 emergency post-rape kits was canceled, leaving thousands of clinics without critical supplies. These kits are vital for preventing HIV, other infections, and unintended pregnancies among survivors of sexual violence. Reports indicate that only 13 percent of rape survivors are currently receiving timely HIV prevention, with thousands more left unassisted.
The combination of medicine shortages, the Ebola outbreak, and disrupted aid has created a dire humanitarian situation in eastern Congo. Humanitarian organizations are urgently appealing for international support to prevent further loss of life and stabilize the region’s healthcare system.
