Thiruvananthapuram: In a significant move ahead of the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season, the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) has officially announced its squad, introducing a notable leadership change. Mohammad Azharuddeen has been appointed as the new captain, succeeding Sachin Baby, who had guided the team to its historic first Ranji Trophy final last season. Sachin Baby remains a key member of the squad, ensuring continuity alongside the leadership transition.
Azharuddeen, aged 31, brings experience and a fresh perspective to the team. He has previously captained the Alappuzha Ripples in the Kerala Cricket League and has established himself as a consistent performer in domestic cricket. His elevation to captaincy is viewed as a strategic decision by KCA to balance seasoned guidance with renewed energy.
The squad also features the return of Indian international star Sanju Samson, who adds substantial depth and experience to the Kerala lineup. Samson's inclusion is expected to boost the team's batting strength and morale, especially given Kerala’s ambition to build on their previous season’s remarkable run.
Kerala’s first fixture of the season is scheduled against Maharashtra on October 15. The team aims to leverage the combination of experienced campaigners like Sachin Baby and Sanju Samson with emerging talents under Azharuddeen's leadership. Analysts believe that the blend of youth and experience positions Kerala as a strong contender in the upcoming Ranji Trophy, potentially aiming for its maiden championship triumph.
The announcement reflects Kerala Cricket Association’s commitment to strengthening the team while fostering leadership development and strategic depth, setting the stage for an exciting domestic season.
