Ramallah: In a noteworthy diplomatic development, the Palestinian Authority (PA) has expressed its readiness to actively support efforts led by U.S. President Donald Trump to stabilize Gaza and facilitate reconstruction. This announcement comes as part of ongoing international efforts to sustain the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and lay the groundwork for long-term peace in the region.
Hussein al-Sheikh, Deputy Head of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), conveyed the Authority’s commitment during a high-level meeting with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who is assisting in coordinating international support for Gaza. Al-Sheikh emphasized that the Palestinian Authority is prepared to take concrete steps to ensure the success of Trump’s plan, including facilitating humanitarian aid, supporting the release of hostages, and aiding in rebuilding the war-torn enclave.
Under the proposed framework, governance in Gaza would temporarily shift from Hamas to a technocratic committee under international supervision. This committee would oversee critical functions and reforms with the ultimate goal of restoring Palestinian Authority control over Gaza after necessary structural and political changes. The initiative envisions a coordinated effort to rebuild infrastructure, stabilize governance, and address humanitarian needs in the densely populated region.
Despite the Palestinian Authority’s willingness to engage, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly opposed any formal role for the PA in governing Gaza, signaling potential friction in the implementation of the plan. Nevertheless, the PA’s support reflects a strategic interest in contributing to regional stability and reinforcing international efforts to end the cycle of conflict.
The announcement arrives against the backdrop of a fragile but holding ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Observers note that while challenges remain, the PA’s involvement could serve as a key bridge between international stakeholders, Hamas, and local communities in Gaza, offering cautious hope for a sustainable resolution to a conflict that has persisted for decades.
