St. Rita’s Public School Temporarily Closed Amid Discussions Over Uniform Policy

Kochi: St. Rita’s Public School, a 27-year-old institution managed by the Augustinian Sisters of the Most Holy Annunciation, was temporarily closed for two days following concerns related to school uniform policy and campus safety. The school, situated on St. Augustine's Convent Road in Palluruthy, has an enrollment of over 600 students.

The situation arose when a newly enrolled student attended school wearing a hijab. The school administration informed the parents that, in line with its uniform policy, religious attire is not part of the prescribed dress code. The school emphasized that this policy is intended to maintain uniformity within a diverse student community.

Following these developments, there were reports of attempts to create tension at the school. In response, the school authorities contacted the Palluruthy police, who promptly ensured the safety of students and staff and maintained a calm environment.

The school administration issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to equality, inclusivity, and the principles of the Indian Constitution. The statement also highlighted the importance of allowing students to pursue their education in a safe and respectful environment.

Attempts to reach school authorities for further comment were not successful, and they are currently not prepared to respond publicly. A teachers’ representative noted that the matter has not yet been officially communicated to church authorities, and the school plans to discuss the situation with the Parent-Teacher Association before determining any further steps.

The temporary closure underscores the efforts of educational institutions and law enforcement to ensure a secure and harmonious environment for students while respecting diverse viewpoints and maintaining peaceful school operations.
