Kochi: The Catholic Congress has issued a strong statement urging the government to refrain from succumbing to communal pressures surrounding the uniform controversy at St. Rita’s School in Palluruthy. The organization emphasized that rulers should not “take shelter under the umbrella of communalism” and must act responsibly to uphold the law and social harmony.
The statement criticizes the Education Minister for his “unwise conduct” on the matter, pointing out that the Kerala High Court has already delivered verdicts in similar cases related to school uniforms. “What credibility does the minister command when his statements contradict judicial rulings?” the Catholic Congress asked, highlighting the risk of undermining public faith in legal institutions.
The organization also pointed out that providing a uniform dress code is a vital symbol of equality, ensuring that all children are treated with fairness and dignity. It warned that extremist communal groups are attempting to create divisions in schools, deliberately distorting facts to serve their agendas. “Those seeking to destroy unity must respect the rule of law,” the statement urged.
The Catholic Congress further cautioned that cooperation with such divisive elements could push Kerala into “chaos,” stressing the need for firm and informed governance. In conclusion, the organization expressed full support for St. Rita’s School, asserting that educational institutions must remain spaces of inclusivity, equality, and harmony.
The message is clear: the protection of children’s rights and the maintenance of social unity should take precedence over political expediency, and communal manipulation must not dictate policy decisions in the state.
