St. Rita’s Public School Maintains Firm Stance on Hijab Controversy: Student Will Be Accepted on Compliance with School Rules

Kochi: St. Rita’s Public School in Palluruthy, Kochi, has reiterated its position amid the ongoing hijab controversy, emphasizing adherence to institutional rules. Principal Sister Helena Albee clarified that the student in question would be allowed to continue her education at the school if she abides by the school’s established rules and regulations.

Addressing the media at a press conference, Sister Helena noted that the student had not been formally informed about obtaining a Transfer Certificate (TC), countering circulating claims. She stressed that the school remains committed to following legal procedures and that many aspects of the matter are still under judicial review.

The principal also expressed gratitude to Education Minister V. Sivankutty, MP Hibi Eden, and Shaun George for their efforts in intervening constructively in the situation. “Several issues are currently before the court, and we trust the legal process to provide resolution,” Sister Helena added.

In contrast, Education Minister V. Sivankutty publicly criticized the school authorities today, arguing that the matter could have been handled more respectfully. He pointed out the irony of the situation, noting that a teacher wearing a headscarf reportedly instructed the student not to wear one, which he described as a troubling inconsistency.

The controversy continues to evoke strong reactions from parents, educators, and political leaders, highlighting the sensitive intersection of school regulations, religious expression, and legal oversight in Kerala’s education landscape.
