Kochi: Authorities in Kochi have issued a stern warning to motorists: even if you think you’re sober in the morning after a night of drinking, driving could still cost you your license. The Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) has confirmed that morning “after-effects” of alcohol consumption are taken seriously during vehicle inspections, and offenders will face strict penalties.
Under the current regulations, if a driver’s blood alcohol content exceeds 50 ml, the driving license is liable to be suspended. Offenders are also required to attend a mandatory one-day driving awareness class. This year alone, from January to September, 437 motorists including bus, lorry, and car drivers have lost their licenses due to drunk driving violations.
In Kochi, the crackdown has intensified, with the Ernakulam RTO, KR Suresh, and Joint RTO, CD Arun, expediting hearings to tackle rising violations. As part of this accelerated process, 1,121 licenses have already been canceled for cases ranging from drunk driving to other serious offenses.
Authorities have emphasized that the misconception of being “safe to drive in the morning” is dangerous and misleading. “Alcohol remains in your system longer than many realize. Driving even after a night of drinking can lead to accidents and legal consequences,” said an RTO official.
The department is urging all drivers to exercise caution, avoid driving under the influence at any time, and prioritize public safety over convenience. With stricter enforcement and awareness measures in place, Kochi’s roads are expected to become safer, and repeat offenders will face heavier scrutiny.
