Kenyan Bishops Pay Tribute to Late Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga: “A Courageous and Visionary Statesman”

Nairobi: As Kenya comes to terms with the loss of its former Prime Minister, Raila Amolo Odinga, the nation’s Catholic Bishops have expressed deep sorrow and respect for the man they hailed as an “illustrious statesman” whose life was devoted to justice, democracy, and the welfare of all Kenyans.

In a heartfelt message issued by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), the Church extended its condolences to President Dr. William Samoei Ruto, Mama Ida Odinga, and the entire Odinga family. The message, signed by Archbishop Maurice Muhatia Makumba of Kisumu, who chairs the KCCB, described Mr. Odinga as a leader of unparalleled courage and conviction who stood firm for democratic principles even in the face of personal trials.

“We join all Kenyans in mourning the loss of a courageous and dedicated leader who tirelessly championed democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, often at great personal risk,” the Bishops’ statement read.

They praised Odinga’s resilience, sacrifice, and steadfast vision for a united and just Kenya, noting that his life’s work would remain “an enduring legacy for generations to come.” The Bishops highlighted his pivotal role in shaping modern Kenya’s democratic framework and his unyielding stand against dictatorship and oppression.

Mr. Odinga, one of Kenya’s most influential and charismatic political figures, dedicated his decades-long career to defending the marginalized, promoting inclusivity, and building national unity. His leadership, they noted, inspired millions across the continent to believe in democracy, equality, and reconciliation.

The Bishops’ message also underscored the Catholic Church’s close relationship with Kenya’s democratic journey a partnership rooted in the shared pursuit of justice, peace, and national cohesion. “As the Church, we have walked alongside the people of Kenya through the years of struggle and renewal. In this moment of grief, we reaffirm our commitment to continue working for the ideals that Raila Odinga so passionately upheld,” the message continued.

Archbishop Makumba and the Bishops concluded their tribute by offering prayers for eternal peace for the departed leader and comfort for his family and the nation.

“May God grant Raila Odinga eternal rest, and may his legacy of courage, sacrifice, and vision continue to guide Kenya toward unity, peace, and prosperity,” they said.

Mr. Raila Odinga’s passing marks the end of a defining chapter in Kenya’s political history one characterized by his unwavering spirit, his fight for democracy, and his belief that leadership is service to the people.
