Chicalim: The parish of Chicalim in Goa marked a historic milestone, celebrating 400 years of Christian faith with a solemn Mass, thanksgiving ceremony, and community festivities that brought together parishioners, clergy, and local dignitaries. The celebrations were presided over by Filipe Neri Cardinal FerrĂŁo, Archbishop of Goa and Daman, who led the faithful in a day of prayer, reflection, and thanksgiving.
Around 600 participants from across the Mormugao deanery attended the event, including former parish priests, religious leaders, and Captain Viriato Fernandes, Member of Parliament. The atmosphere was one of joy, reverence, and unity as generations of families came together to honour their shared spiritual heritage.
In his homily, Cardinal FerrĂŁo emphasized that faith is a divine gift that must be nurtured through prayer, study of Scripture, and active participation in the Eucharist. Drawing inspiration from St Francis Xavier, he encouraged parishioners to embody unity, peace, and service. âFamily is the basic community,â he remarked, urging families to preserve and strengthen the faith that has been passed down through centuries.
A highlight of the celebration was the unveiling of a sacred relic from the Basilica of Bom Jesus a piece of wood from the coffin of St Francis Xavier. The relic, presented by Rector Fr Patricio Fernandes, SJ, was received with reverence by parish priest Fr Bolmax Pereira, symbolizing Chicalimâs deep connection to the broader Goan Catholic heritage.
The jubilee also saw the release of a commemorative coffee table book documenting the parishâs 400-year journey. Edited by Fr Bolmax Pereira in collaboration with parishioners, the book captures the spiritual, cultural, and social history of Chicalim, offering a rich chronicle of its enduring Christian identity.
Cardinal FerrĂŁo concluded the Mass with a special blessing for the faithful, invoking continued guidance and protection for the community. The celebrations extended into the evening with the release of a Jubilee theme song composed by SFX Music Academy, followed by a fellowship meal generously sponsored by Filomenaâs Kitchen Restaurant.
The 400th-anniversary celebrations in Chicalim were not merely a commemoration of a historical milestone but also a reaffirmation of the parishâs enduring Christian legacy, communal spirit, and dedication to faith. The Jubilee year, filled with prayer, learning, and joy, strengthened the bonds of the Chicalim community and highlighted its vibrant role in Goan Catholic life.
