October 19 : The North American Martyrs

The eight North American martyrs, also known as the Canadian Martyrs, the Jesuit Martyrs of North America, or the Martyrs of New France, were six priests and two lay brothers of the Society of Jesus who gave their lives in the 17th century while bringing the Catholic faith to the indigenous peoples of North America, including the Huron, Iroquois, and Mohawk nations. Their courage and dedication exemplify missionary zeal and heroic virtue.

Five of these martyrs were killed in what is now Canada, and three were martyred in New York State in the United States. Today, shrines honor their sacrifice. The Canadian Martyrs Shrine is at Fort Sainte-Marie near Midland, Ontario, and the National Shrine of the North American Martyrs is at Auriesville, New York.

The eight martyrs are:

• Saint Rene Goupil, lay brother, martyred in 1642 in New York State
• Saint Isaac Jogues, priest, martyred in 1646 in New York State
• Saint Jean de Lalande, lay brother, martyred in 1646 in New York State
• Saint Antoine Daniel, priest, martyred in Canada in 1648
• Saint Jean de Brebeuf, priest, martyred in Canada in 1649
• Saint Charles Garnier, priest, martyred in Canada in 1649
• Saint Noel Chabanel, priest, martyred in Canada in 1649
• Saint Gabriel Lalemant, priest, martyred in Canada in 1649

Saint Isaac Jogues endured thirteen months of captivity at the hands of the Mohawks, during which several of his fingers were amputated. Despite this, he returned to North America to continue his mission and was ultimately killed by tomahawk blows at Ossernenon, now called Auriesville, in New York State.

Saint Jean de Brebeuf declared before his death that he had a strong desire to suffer for Jesus Christ. He was tortured severely, including having a burning torch placed into his mouth. Saint Rene Goupil, the youngest martyr at thirty-five, cried Jesus, Jesus, Jesus as he died. Saint Noel Chabanel was thirty-six, while Saint Isaac Jogues and Saint Gabriel Lalemant were thirty-nine. The oldest, Saint Jean de Brebeuf, was fifty-six when he was martyred.

The eight North American martyrs were canonized by Pope Pius XI on June 29, 1930. Their memorial is celebrated on October 19, and in Canada it is also observed on September 26. They are remembered for their courage, their commitment to spreading the Gospel, and their service to the indigenous communities.
