Kenyan nun bridges faith and law to deliver justice

Nairobi : In Nairobi’s bustling courtrooms, Sister Immaculate Muthoni stands out not just for her legal expertise but for the rare combination of faith and profession she embodies. A member of the Little Sisters of Saint Francis, she is both a nun and an attorney of the High Court of Kenya, merging spiritual commitment with legal advocacy.

Her journey into law began with a desire to serve the marginalized. Initially drawn to political science, she found it too mired in partisanship. Law, she realized, offered a more direct path to justice while allowing her to honor her religious vocation. “I thought law was the lesser evil and to this day I do not regret being a lawyer,” she reflects.

In court, Sister Immaculate introduces herself as “Sister Immaculate appearing for the client,” a title that often disarms opponents and encourages dialogue. Her approach is about more than winning cases; it is about ensuring justice is experienced by those she represents. She recalls guiding a woman overwhelmed by injustice through the legal system pro bono, helping her achieve both justice and healing.

Despite skepticism from some colleagues who see her as “too soft” and questions from religious circles about her involvement in secular work, Sister Immaculate remains steadfast. She believes her dual role challenges stereotypes and demonstrates the credibility and depth a woman of faith can bring to professional spaces.

Her work exemplifies a new form of evangelization, living out Gospel values of justice, compassion, and integrity in the public sphere. Sister Immaculate envisions a future where more religious sisters engage in law, governance, and professional fields, breaking boundaries and shaping justice systems with a Gospel spirit.

Through her unique vocation, Sister Immaculate Muthoni is not only advocating for justice in Kenyan courtrooms but also inspiring a broader movement of faith driven legal activism across Africa.
