US teen travels across Africa to promote children’s rosary movement

Nairobi: An 18 year old American student, Asher Kaufman from Connecticut, has embarked on an inspiring mission across Africa to promote the 'Children’s Rosary', a global prayer movement founded by his mother, Dr. Blythe Marie Kaufman, in 2011.

Asher began his tour in Uganda in mid September and has since visited Rwanda and Tanzania. His journey will continue through Kenya, Madagascar, South Africa and Cameroon over the coming months. The trip, which he describes as a blend of missionary outreach and spiritual discernment, aims to strengthen children’s prayer groups and establish new ones across the continent.

“I felt like this was something the Lord was calling me to do,” Asher said, reflecting on his journey that will last until July 2026. The teen, who plans to enter seminary in September 2026 under the Archdiocese of Hartford, sees the trip as part of his preparation for priesthood.

During his travels, Asher visits parishes, schools and dioceses, meeting with bishops and community leaders to encourage young people to pray the rosary together. His mission is also supported by thousands of handmade rosaries more than 64,000 of them shipped from the United States for distribution to children across Africa.

He said he has been deeply moved by the faith and enthusiasm of the children he has met. “In Uganda, there were groups of over 70 children praying together. Their joy and devotion really touched me,” he shared.

The 'Children’s Rosary'  movement began with just a few children praying in a parish in Connecticut and has since expanded to over 45 countries. In Africa, where Catholic schools often include students from other faiths, Asher sees the movement as an opportunity to foster unity and prayer among all children.

As he continues his faith filled journey across the continent, Asher hopes his efforts will inspire more young people to embrace prayer and strengthen their relationship with God.
