Pope Leo XIV calls for zero tolerance on abuse in the Church

Pope Leo XIV has reaffirmed the Catholic Church’s firm stance against any form of abuse, emphasizing that there must be “no tolerance” for misconduct within the Church. His message was delivered to the National Safeguarding Conference held in Clark-Angeles, Philippines, from October 20 to 24, 2025.

In his message, transmitted through Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Charles J. Brown, Pope expressed deep appreciation for the conference’s efforts to strengthen child protection and pastoral accountability. The message was addressed to Archbishop Florentino G. Lavarias, Chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines’ Office on the Protection of Minors.

“The Church is our spiritual home,” Pope Leo XIV stated. “Every parish and pastoral activity should be a space in which we glorify God and care for others, especially children and the vulnerable.” He renewed his appeal that “there can be no tolerance for any form of abuse in the Church.”

Pope urged Church leaders to ensure that effective safeguarding measures are implemented. He called for clear policies and practices that promote transparency, foster a culture of prevention, and protect “these little ones” entrusted to the Church’s care.

“In doing so,” he said, “the Church in the Philippines and beyond will be a more authentic witness of Christ, the Good Shepherd, who always loves and cares for His flock.”

Pope Leo XIV concluded his message by entrusting the participants of the safeguarding conference to the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary and imparted his Apostolic Blessing, encouraging continued dedication to protecting the dignity and safety of all, especially the most vulnerable.
