Bangkok: Thailand is set to hold its next general election on March 29, 2026, following an announcement from a senior government official. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul plans to dissolve parliament by the end of January next year, paving the way for the nationwide vote.
The Election Commission has not yet formally confirmed the date, but chairman Ittiporn Boonpracong indicated that preparations are underway. Alongside the general election, Thailand is also expected to hold two referendums: one on a proposed new constitution and another concerning the revocation of two border agreements with Cambodia.
The combined cost for the election and the referendums is estimated at approximately 9 billion baht, with around 53 million citizens eligible to cast their votes.
Prime Minister Anutin assumed office in September 2025 after his Bhumjaithai party left the previous coalition led by the Pheu Thai party. He secured support from the opposition People's Party under conditions that include holding a new election and a constitutional referendum within four months.
The upcoming election marks a significant moment in Thailand’s political landscape, reflecting ongoing shifts in party alliances and constitutional reform efforts.
