Taiwan expresses confidence in stable US ties ahead of Trump Xi meeting

Taipei: Taiwan’s government has expressed confidence that its relationship with the United States remains firm and steady, just days before an anticipated meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Foreign Minister Lin Chia Lung said that Taipei is not concerned about the upcoming talks affecting its partnership with Washington. Speaking to reporters, he described Taiwan US relations as “very stable,” noting ongoing cooperation in security, trade, and business. Lin added that communication channels between Taipei and Washington remain open and effective despite the sensitive geopolitical atmosphere.

President Trump and President Xi are expected to meet this week in South Korea on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. The meeting is seen as an important opportunity to address trade tensions and security challenges in the Indo Pacific region.

Trump has stated that Xi assured him China would not attempt any military action against Taiwan while he is in office. However, some observers in Taipei have noted that no new US arms sales to Taiwan have been approved under Trump’s current term, raising questions about the depth of Washington’s commitment to the island’s defense.

At the same time, China continues to increase pressure on Taiwan through diplomatic isolation, military activities near its airspace, and legal moves targeting Taiwanese politicians. A recent investigation by authorities in China’s Chongqing city against a Taiwanese lawmaker is being viewed in Taipei as part of Beijing’s wider campaign to intimidate supporters of Taiwan’s sovereignty.

Earlier this month, Taiwan’s defense ministry announced plans to expand military cooperation with the US, including more high level visits, intelligence exchanges, and joint training opportunities. Officials said the move is aimed at strengthening Taiwan’s ability to respond to potential threats.

Analysts believe that Taiwan’s calm and confident tone ahead of the Trump Xi meeting reflects a deliberate strategy to reassure its citizens and allies while avoiding unnecessary confrontation with Beijing. However, they also note that Taipei will be watching closely to see if Taiwan’s interests are raised during the talks, especially on issues related to defense support and regional stability.

As both economic and security discussions dominate the agenda between Washington and Beijing, Taiwan’s position remains crucial in the broader US China rivalry. The outcome of this week’s summit could signal how the delicate balance of power across the Taiwan Strait might evolve in the months ahead.
