Pope Leo prays for victims of hurricane Melissa and urges solidarity

Vatican :  Pope Leo XIV has expressed his deep sorrow and solidarity with the people affected by the devastating Hurricane Melissa, which has torn through parts of the Caribbean with catastrophic force. Speaking at the end of his General Audience in St. Peter’s Square,  Pope offered prayers for the victims, those displaced, and the many families anxiously waiting for the storm’s outcome.

The powerful hurricane made landfall in Cuba near the town of Chivirico in Santiago de Cuba province, leaving widespread destruction in its wake. Thousands of residents have been displaced, and critical infrastructure such as homes, hospitals, and roads has been damaged.  Pope called on civil authorities to take every possible measure to support those affected and thanked Christian communities and volunteer organizations already engaged in relief efforts.

Recent reports indicate that Hurricane Melissa has intensified into a Category 5 storm, making it one of the strongest hurricanes to strike the region in decades. With winds exceeding 160 miles per hour, the storm poses a severe threat to Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic, where authorities are bracing for heavy rainfall, flash floods, and storm surges reaching up to 13 feet.

Local bishops under the Antilles Episcopal Conference have also called for prayers and solidarity as communities struggle to cope with the unfolding disaster. Many residents in affected regions live in fragile homes and informal settlements, leaving them highly vulnerable to the storm’s impact.

Pope’s message highlighted the importance of compassion and concrete action in times of tragedy. His appeal for unity and assistance resonates across faith communities, reminding the world that recovery requires both prayer and active support.

As the hurricane continues its path, emergency services across the Caribbean are working to reach isolated areas and provide essential aid. The Vatican is expected to continue monitoring the situation closely, with further assistance initiatives likely in the coming days.
