Kampala: The 71st anniversary of the devotion to St Jude Thaddeus in Uganda was celebrated with great faith and joy at Our Lady of Perpetual Help and St Jude Parish in Naguru, Kampala. The celebration brought together thousands of pilgrims from across Uganda and neighboring Kenya, marking one of the country’s most significant Catholic devotional events.
The main celebrant of the anniversary Mass was Bishop Mark Kadima Wamukoya of Bungoma Diocese in Kenya. Leading a delegation of Kenyan pilgrims, the bishop delivered a powerful homily centered on the values of community, prayer, and humility.
He reminded the faithful that true Christian living means walking and working together. “Even Jesus did not work alone,” he said, encouraging believers to live in harmony with others and avoid the spirit of isolation.
According to him, when people choose to act together, the fruits of faith become visible through compassion and service.
Bishop Kadima also called on Christians to remain steadfast in prayer, especially during difficult times. “It is through prayer that we receive God’s blessings and strength to move forward,” he told the congregation. He urged everyone to seek divine help rather than relying only on personal effort.
Another theme the bishop stressed was humility. He encouraged the faithful to honor the work of those who came before them and to build upon their legacy with gratitude and respect. “We must not think we are greater than those who laid the foundations of our faith. Let us continue their mission with humility,” he said.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni also joined the celebration, commending the Catholic Church for promoting unity and moral values in society. He promised continued support for religious initiatives that strengthen social harmony and national development.
The devotion to St Jude Thaddeus at Naguru, which began 71 years ago, has grown into a national event of deep spiritual significance. Each year, thousands gather to seek the intercession of St Jude, the patron saint of desperate causes, and to renew their faith and hope.
This year’s anniversary was not only a moment of prayer but also a message of togetherness and renewal. As Bishop Kadima reminded the faithful, the Church grows strongest when its people live, work, and pray with one another in faith and love.
