India wins maiden women’s cricket world cup after beating South Africa

New Delhi: India created history by winning their first-ever ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup title after defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the final held at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The victory marks a new chapter in Indian women’s cricket, ending years of near misses in previous editions.

Batting first, India put up an impressive total of 298 for 7 in their 50 overs. The innings was powered by an outstanding performance from Shafali Verma, who scored 87 runs, giving India a strong start. Deepti Sharma played a key all-round role by scoring 58 runs and later taking five wickets, becoming one of the stars of the match.

South Africa, chasing 299 for victory, showed promise early in their innings but struggled to keep up with the mounting pressure. Their captain Laura Wolvaardt played a determined knock but received little support from the other end. The Indian bowlers maintained discipline and struck at crucial moments, bowling out South Africa for 246 runs.

India’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur praised her team’s composure and teamwork, saying that the victory was the result of years of hard work and belief. She also dedicated the win to all those who supported women’s cricket in the country.

The triumph is especially significant as India had finished as runners-up twice before, in 2005 and 2017. This time, the team showed remarkable consistency throughout the tournament and carried that form into the final.

For South Africa, it was another heartbreak after a strong campaign. Despite their excellent performances earlier in the tournament, they could not overcome India’s determination on the big day.

With this victory, India has become the new powerhouse in women’s cricket, and the win is expected to inspire a new generation of young girls to take up the sport.

The 2025 World Cup will be remembered not just for the title, but for India’s unity, skill, and unshakable spirit on the world stage.
