Moscow: Russia has issued a stark warning to Ukrainian forces stationed in the contested cities of Pokrovsk and Kupiansk, claiming that troops in both locations are effectively encircled and have no chance of survival unless they surrender. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Ukrainian units are trapped in “cauldrons,” with Russian forces advancing rapidly and leaving limited options for the defenders.
Pokrovsk, often referred to as the “gateway to Donetsk,” has been a primary target of Russian advances since 2024, as Moscow seeks to capture the entirety of Ukraine’s Donbas region. Ukrainian forces continue to hold roughly 10% of Donbas, or about 5,000 square kilometers, according to Russian estimates. Kupiansk, meanwhile, has become another focal point, with Russian forces controlling significant portions of the city and advancing along the main thoroughfares.
Russia’s current approach contrasts with previous frontal assaults, instead relying on pincer movements, small mobile units, and drone operations to disrupt Ukrainian supply lines and create what military analysts describe as “grey zones.” These areas, while not fully controlled by either side, pose severe defensive challenges for Ukrainian troops.
The Russian Defense Ministry directly disputed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s recent statements, which claimed that only around 60 Russian soldiers were present in Kupiansk. Moscow’s portrayal emphasizes that Ukrainian forces are increasingly isolated and in a rapidly deteriorating position.
The broader conflict, now approaching its fourth year, remains Europe’s deadliest since World War II. Russia claims to control more than 19% of Ukrainian territory approximately 116,000 square kilometers while pro-Ukrainian sources suggest that Russia has captured over 3,400 square kilometers in 2025 alone.
Observers warn that the outcome in Pokrovsk and Kupiansk could have far-reaching strategic and symbolic implications. A Ukrainian surrender would strengthen Russian positions in eastern Ukraine and potentially undermine morale, whereas successful Ukrainian resistance could stall Moscow’s advances and provide critical breathing space for Kyiv’s broader defense efforts.
The coming days are likely to be decisive, as both sides weigh military options amid a tense and volatile frontline. Civilian populations in these towns face heightened risks due to the intensifying conflict and potential humanitarian crises.
