Pope Leo XIV: AI Should Mirror the Creative Wisdom of God

Rome: Pope Leo XIV has emphasized that artificial intelligence must serve humanity in ways that uphold human dignity, justice, and the common good, urging developers and leaders to ensure technology reflects the divine design of God the Creator “intelligent, relational, and guided by love.”

Addressing participants of the 2025 Builders AI Forum at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, the Pope called on scientists, entrepreneurs, and pastoral leaders to root AI innovation in ethical principles that honor human life and foster the collective welfare. He expressed gratitude to those striving to harmonize technological progress with the Church’s mission through research, entrepreneurship, and pastoral foresight.

“The real question is not simply what AI can achieve,” Pope Leo XIV stated, “but how these technologies shape the kind of people we are becoming.” He reminded attendees that all human invention, including AI, originates from the creative spark entrusted to humanity by God. In this sense, technological innovation becomes a form of participating in the divine act of creation.

The Pope highlighted that each act of innovation carries profound ethical and spiritual responsibility, noting that every design decision conveys a vision of humanity. He encouraged AI practitioners to integrate moral discernment into their work, creating systems that embody justice, solidarity, and reverence for life.

Pope Leo XIV underscored that ethical AI is not solely a matter for laboratories or corporate boardrooms. He described it as a deeply ecclesial mission, reflecting the ongoing dialogue between faith and reason in the digital age. Participants were urged to view their contributions as part of a collective effort to ensure technology serves evangelization and the holistic development of every person, whether in education, healthcare, or digital media.

“Intelligence, whether artificial or human,” the Pope affirmed, “reaches its fullest expression when it is rooted in love, freedom, and relationship with God.”
