Kerala Government Greenlights Phase 1 of Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail Project; Route, Stations Revealed

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has officially approved the Phase 1 alignment of the Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail project, a major step forward in modernizing the city’s urban transport. Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has been entrusted with executing the project, which aims to transform mobility in the state capital and boost its overall development.

KMRL, already known for constructing the Srikaryam, Ulloor, and Pattom flyovers, will oversee the development of the 31-kilometre Phase 1 corridor. The metro line is designed to link key IT hubs, transport centres, administrative offices, and healthcare institutions, significantly easing traffic congestion in the city.

The first phase of the metro will connect three phases of Technopark, the airport, Thampanoor bus stand, Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station, the Secretariat, and the Medical College. Officials believe this alignment will not only improve commute times but also promote more sustainable urban travel in the capital.

Phase 1 of the Thiruvananthapuram Metro will feature 27 stations, including: Pappanamcode (terminal), Kaimanam, Karamana, Thampanoor, Secretariat, Palayam, Plamoodu, Pattom, Murinjapalam, Medical College, Ulloor, Pongumoodu, Sreekaryam, Pangappara, Gurumandiram, Karyavattom, Technopark Phase 1, Technopark Phase 3, Kulathoor, Technopark Phase 2, Akkulam Lake, Kochuveli, Venpalavattom, Chaakka, Airport, and Eanchakkal (terminal). Three key interchange stations Kazhakoottam, Technopark Phase 1, and Karyavattom will enable smooth transfers along the corridor.

Kerala has been progressively modernizing urban transport, with Kochi leading the way as the first Indian city to launch a Water Metro project. The initiative has eased congestion, reduced pollution, and improved connectivity between lakeshore communities and mainland business districts. Thiruvananthapuram’s metro project is expected to replicate this success, enhancing mobility and supporting the city’s rapid growth.
