Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV on Saturday morning received the President of the Republic of South Africa, His Excellency Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, during a private audience at the Vatican.
A communiqué issued by the Holy See Press Office described the meeting as “cordial,” highlighting the spirit of mutual respect and understanding that marked the exchange. Both sides expressed appreciation for the significant role the Catholic Church continues to play in South Africa, especially through its contributions to education, healthcare, and social welfare.
The discussion also acknowledged the Church’s ongoing efforts to promote dialogue, peace, and reconciliation within South African society, reflecting its commitment to national unity and human dignity.
