State Gears Up for Local Body Polls; EC to Announce Dates at Noon

Thiruvananthapuram: The countdown for local body elections in the state ends today as the Election Commission is set to reveal the official schedule at a press briefing at 12 noon. According to sources, this year’s elections are expected to be conducted in two phases.

The two-phase voting will cover seven districts each, with the final dates for polling and the deadline for submitting nominations expected to be disclosed during the press conference.

Voters will elect representatives to a total of 1,200 local self-government bodies, comprising 941 panchayats, 152 block panchayats, 87 municipalities, 14 district panchayats, and six corporations.

Political parties are already moving swiftly with candidate declarations. Both the UDF and BJP have unveiled their nominees in several key corporations, signaling the start of a heated electoral contest.
