Thousands join annual Eucharistic procession in Tura Diocese

Tura: Thousands of faithful from across Meghalaya gathered in the Diocese of Tura to take part in the annual Eucharistic procession held at the Sacred Heart Shrine in Chandmari. The event, organized by the Diocese of Tura, drew about 5,000 participants who walked in prayer through the streets of the town, expressing their deep devotion to the Holy Eucharist.

The solemn celebration began with a Holy Mass led by Bishop Andrew R. Marak of Tura, together with Auxiliary Bishop Jose Chirackal. The faithful, carrying candles and singing hymns, followed the Blessed Sacrament in a long procession that reflected unity, peace, and the strength of their shared faith.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma attended the event, marking the strong bond between the Church and the wider community in the region. His presence, along with the participation of civic leaders and parish representatives, highlighted the inclusive nature of the annual gathering, which has become a major faith tradition in the Garo Hills.

This year’s procession was also linked to the Mission Exposure Programme of Communio, a volunteer organization that promotes Christian unity and social service. Volunteers played a key role in organizing the event and ensuring smooth coordination among parishes.

The streets of Tura came alive with prayerful songs and decorations as people from all walks of life joined the march. Many described the experience as a moment of spiritual renewal, bringing together both the young and the old in a visible sign of community faith.

Similar Eucharistic processions were also held in Shillong and other parts of Meghalaya, underscoring the vibrancy of Catholic life in the Northeast. For the Diocese of Tura, the procession was not only a public witness of faith but also a celebration of togetherness, reminding participants that the Eucharist remains the heart of Christian life.
