Tokyo: Toyota has revealed the all new 2026 Hilux, marking a major step in the evolution of its iconic pickup truck. For the first time, the Hilux will be available as a fully electric model, alongside diesel, petrol, and hybrid versions, as part of Toyota’s multi-path strategy to offer customers a range of powertrain choices.
The ninth generation Hilux comes with a tougher and more modern look, featuring slimmer LED headlights, a wider stance, and a refined interior equipped with dual 12.3 inch digital displays. The model maintains its trusted body-on-frame design, known for strength and durability, while adding new safety systems such as proactive driving assist and emergency driving stop functions.
The electric Hilux, expected to launch globally by December 2025, uses a 59.2 kilowatt hour lithium ion battery and offers a driving range of around 240 to 300 kilometers depending on the region. It delivers all wheel drive through twin electric axles and has a payload capacity of about 715 kilograms with towing ability of up to 1600 kilograms.
Toyota said the electric version is mainly aimed at fleet operators and commercial users in markets with good charging infrastructure. Meanwhile, the popular diesel and petrol variants will continue in regions where electric charging networks are still developing.
A hydrogen fuel cell version of the Hilux is also planned for 2028, reinforcing Toyota’s focus on offering multiple clean energy options.
The new Hilux will first reach showrooms in Australia and parts of Europe before expanding to other markets. Pricing details are yet to be announced, but early reports suggest the new model will cost more than its predecessor due to added technology and features.
Toyota’s move to electrify its best selling pickup reflects the company’s gradual but steady shift toward sustainable mobility, while keeping the rugged reliability that has made the Hilux one of the most trusted workhorses on roads and off road trails around the world.
