Historic breakthrough for Rabha language as Bible, dictionary and grammar released

Goalpara: A major milestone for the Rabha community was celebrated in Goalpara as the complete Holy Bible in the Rabha language, along with a new edition of the Rabha dictionary and a grammar book, was formally released at St Francis of Assisi Church in Matia Majerburi.

The event drew community leaders, scholars, church representatives and hundreds of Rabha families who gathered to witness what many described as a new chapter in the literary history of the Rabha people. The publications include the Rabha Bible, the second edition of the Khurangnala English Rabha and Rabha English dictionary and a grammar book titled An Introduction to Rongdani Rabha.

The translation and compilation work was led by Fr U V Jose SDB and Bhupen Torang, with a dedicated team of Rabha translators contributing to the Bible project. Speakers at the event said that producing such major works in the mother tongue strengthens both cultural identity and education for future generations.

Community members expressed pride that their language now has a complete set of resources that will support not only religious life but also learning and linguistic development. Many said this achievement would encourage young people to value and use their mother tongue more confidently.

The celebration included traditional music and dance performances, highlighting the community’s cultural heritage. A meal was later shared by more than two thousand people, marking the occasion as both a cultural and spiritual moment of unity.

Leaders from the Rabha community noted that recent government decisions to introduce the Rabha language as a medium of instruction in several schools have already boosted interest in mother tongue learning. They said the new Bible, dictionary and grammar book will further support these efforts and help preserve the language for future generations.
