Meghalaya chief minister joins thousands in eucharistic procession at Tura

Tura: Thousands of faithful took part in a large eucharistic celebration and procession in Tura, where Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma walked alongside people in a display of faith and solidarity.

The annual event, organised by the Diocese of Tura, brought together nearly five thousand participants. The holy eucharist was led by Bishop Andrew R Marak along with Auxiliary Bishop Jose Chirackal and several priests of the diocese. The gathering reflected the strong Catholic presence in the Garo Hills and the deep devotion of the local community.

Chief Minister Sangma attended the Mass from the beginning and later joined the long procession through the streets. Witnesses said he walked with the crowd without any security detail, which many saw as a gesture of humility and respect for the religious occasion. After the celebration, he shared lunch with the bishops and priests and spent time discussing the pastoral activities of the diocese and the Churchs contribution to society.

Church officials expressed appreciation for the chief ministers participation. They said his presence encouraged the faithful and highlighted the importance of cooperation between the Church and the government in serving people, especially in areas of education, social welfare and community development.

The eucharistic procession in Tura was one of the major religious gatherings in Meghalaya this week. Other cities, including Shillong, also held similar processions, drawing large crowds and renewing a public expression of faith across the state.

For many in Tura, the event was a moment of unity and spiritual strength, bringing together citizens, leaders and church communities in a shared act of devotion.
