Pope Leo XIV: “The Lord longs for peace among all His children”

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV, addressing the faithful at the Sunday Angelus, delivered a moving appeal for an end to violence, discrimination, and persecution particularly against Christian communities across the world.

Lamenting the ongoing suffering caused by wars and targeted attacks, the Pope condemned assaults on churches and faith-based institutions. “My thoughts turn especially to Bangladesh, Nigeria, Mozambique, Sudan, and many other regions where communities and places of worship face repeated violence,” he said. “God is a compassionate Father who desires peace among all His children.”

The Pope expressed deep concern for the people of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where terrorists brutally killed around 20 civilians at a Church-run hospital in Byambwe on Friday evening. He urged the faithful to pray that violence everywhere may come to an end, and that believers unite in promoting the common good.

Pope Leo XIV said he continues to monitor reports of fresh attacks on Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, where recent strikes have caused severe destruction and civilian casualties.
“We must never allow ourselves to grow numb to war and devastation,” he warned. “Let us join together in praying for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”

The Pope also turned his thoughts to Peru, where a devastating road accident on Wednesday claimed at least 37 lives when a bus traveling from Chala to Arequipa collided with another vehicle and plunged into a ravine.

“May the Lord embrace those who have died, strengthen those who are injured, and console their grieving families,” he prayed. He also urged everyone to reflect seriously on personal responsibility behind the wheel, noting that many tragedies stem from negligence.

In closing, Pope Leo XIV highlighted that the Church in Italy was observing a Day of Prayer for Victims and Survivors of Abuse. He prayed for the growth of a culture rooted in respect and the protection of every individual’s dignity, especially minors and people in vulnerable situations.
