Washington: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman arrived in the United States on Monday for an important visit aimed at strengthening defense cooperation and expanding talks on artificial intelligence and civil nuclear energy. This is his first trip to the US since 2018 and comes at a time when both countries are trying to redefine their strategic partnership.
The crown prince is expected to meet President Donald Trump in Washington to discuss a wide agenda that includes a potential defense pact, advanced technology partnerships and future steps in Saudi Arabias nuclear energy plans. His visit also features a two day investment summit bringing together American companies and senior Saudi officials.
Saudi Arabia is pushing for stronger security guarantees from the US as regional tensions continue. Riyadh has been seeking a formal defense agreement, but Washington has linked the deal to progress on Saudi relations with Israel. Saudi leaders have said they will not move toward normalisation unless there is a clear path toward a Palestinian state.
Talks on artificial intelligence are another priority. Saudi Arabia wants access to powerful chips and advanced systems to help build its technology industry. The crown prince aims to make the kingdom a leading center for AI under his Vision 2030 economic plan.
Civil nuclear cooperation is also on the table. Saudi Arabia is hoping for US support to develop nuclear energy, while American officials remain cautious about steps such as uranium enrichment that carry security risks. Both sides are still working to find a compromise.
The visit comes after years of tension following the 2018 killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Analysts say both countries now want a steadier and more predictable partnership as the Middle East faces conflict and economic pressure.
Decisions made during this trip are expected to shape US Saudi relations for years ahead, especially in defense, technology and nuclear development.
