Google seeks dismissal of ai defamation case filed by conservative influencer

California: Google has asked a Delaware court to throw out a lawsuit filed by conservative influencer Robby Starbuck, who claims the company’s artificial intelligence tools generated false and damaging statements about him. The tech giant argued that the case has no legal basis and should not move forward.

Starbuck sued Google earlier this year, alleging that its chatbots produced false claims accusing him of serious crimes and linking him to extremist figures. He said these statements spread widely online and harmed his reputation, prompting threats and personal distress. He is seeking millions of dollars in damages.

In its latest court filing, Google said Starbuck had misused its developer tools in a way that encouraged inaccurate responses from the AI models. The company also said he failed to show that any real person believed the false information or acted on it, which is a key requirement in defamation cases.

Google further argued that Starbuck, as a public figure, must meet a higher legal standard by proving that the company acted with actual malice. The company said there was no evidence that it knowingly allowed false claims or acted with disregard for the truth.

The case is being closely watched because it could shape how courts handle defamation claims involving AI generated content. Legal experts say the outcome may influence how technology companies design their systems and what responsibilities they hold for incorrect or harmful outputs.

The Delaware court is expected to review Google’s request in the coming weeks. The decision will help determine whether the lawsuit proceeds to a full hearing or ends at this stage.
