Pope’s visit seen as a message of hope for Lebanon, says Maronite Archbishop

Beirut: The Maronite Archbishop of Beirut, Paul Abdel Sater, says Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming visit to Lebanon will bring renewed strength to a nation struggling with years of social, political and economic crises. Pope will visit the country from November 30 to December 2 as part of his first international trip, which also includes Turkey.

Archbishop Abdel Sater said the people of Lebanon are preparing to welcome Pope with great joy and gratitude. He explained that Pope Leo has shown his concern for Lebanon since the beginning of his papacy and has spoken many times about the difficulties facing the Lebanese people.

According to the Archbishop, the main message Pope brings is one of hope, peace and love. He believes that Pope’s presence alone will lift the spirits of many who feel forgotten. “We are not expecting immediate solutions,” he said. “It is enough for us that he is coming to be with us and pray with us.”

The Archbishop added that the visit reminds the Lebanese people that they are not alone. He said the support of Catholics and friends around the world gives them strength to continue their mission and remain witnesses of love in a difficult environment.

Pope’s visit is also expected to draw international attention back to Lebanon. Archbishop Abdel Sater noted that media coverage plays an important role in highlighting the challenges the country faces. He called on the global community to remain aware of the struggles of the Lebanese people.

He invited all faithful in Lebanon to come and welcome Pope, listen to his words and show their appreciation. After the visit, he encouraged them to spread the message of Jesus Christ and share the hope they receive.

Pope Leo XIV’s trip will include meetings with political and religious leaders, a public Mass in Beirut and a visit to the site of the 2020 port explosion. The theme of the visit is Blessed are the peacemakers, reflecting Pope’s desire to encourage unity and reconciliation in the region.
