Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV told faithful gathered for the Jubilee Audience on Saturday that peace can grow only when people are willing to defend human dignity wherever it is threatened. He reflected on the life of Servant of God Dorothy Day, an American Catholic known for her tireless work for the poor and migrants.
Pope said Christians are called to do good and to stand up for what is right. Drawing on the day’s Gospel reading, he encouraged people to be concrete in their efforts to help others and to recognize how God’s gifts can be used to build a more caring society.
Dorothy Day, who lived from 1897 to 1980, co founded the Catholic Worker movement during the Great Depression.
Pope recalled how she saw the struggles of workers and families left behind by economic systems and felt compelled to act. He said she understood that many people’s dreams were turning into hardships and that her faith pushed her to serve those most in need.
Pope Leo praised Day for her courage and for her ability to turn concern into practical action. He said her example shows that hope is not passive but requires taking a stand with Christ and working for change.
Pope prayed that the Jubilee of Hope will help renew this spirit within the Church and inspire people to defend human dignity with conviction.
