Today the Church honors Saint Andrew Dung Lac and 116 companions who gave their lives for Christ in Vietnam between the 17th and 19th centuries. They were bishops, priests, and laypeople men, women, and even a nine year old child who remained faithful despite severe persecution. Among them were 96 Vietnamese Catholics and 21 foreign missionaries from Spain and France.
Saint Andrew Dung Lac, originally named Dung An Tran, was born into a non-Christian family and became Catholic as a boy. He later became a priest known for his humble life and dedicated ministry. During times of intense persecution, he was arrested several times for practicing his faith and helping others live it. He was eventually executed with a fellow priest, Peter Thi, in 1839.
The courage of these martyrs strengthened the Church in Vietnam and inspired generations of believers. Their witness reminds us that faith can flourish even in the most difficult circumstances. Today we remember them as a great cloud of witnesses whose steadfast love for Christ continues to shine.
