Indonesia offers unlimited stay permit to former citizens

Jakarta: Indonesia has introduced a new long term residency scheme that allows former Indonesian citizens and people of Indonesian descent to live and work in the country without time limits. The policy is part of the Global Citizenship of Indonesia programme, launched to strengthen ties with the country’s large overseas community.

Under the new rule, former Indonesian citizens and foreign nationals with Indonesian roots up to the second generation can apply for a permit that grants them an indefinite stay. The offer is also open to children from mixed marriages and to spouses of Indonesian or former Indonesian citizens.

Officials say the scheme is meant to give an alternative to dual citizenship, which Indonesia does not allow for adults. The government hopes it will make it easier for skilled Indonesians living abroad to return home and contribute to national development.

The law also includes restrictions. People who previously held Indonesian citizenship but were involved in separatist activities, or who have served in foreign military or intelligence services, will not be eligible.

Authorities believe the new permit will help maintain stronger connections with Indonesians who have moved abroad and encourage them to invest, work or build businesses in their home country. The immigration department has opened an online system to process applications and provide guidance for those interested in the scheme.
