November 26: Saint Leonard of Port Maurice

Saint Leonard of Port Maurice was born on December 20, 1676, in Porto Maurizio, Italy. His parents, Domenico Casanova, a sea captain, and Anna Maria Benza, named him Paul Jerome Casanova at birth.

At 13, he was sent to live with his uncle Agostino to prepare for a career in medicine. However, when he chose not to pursue that path, his uncle disowned him. He then continued his studies at the Jesuit College in Rome.

On October 2, 1697, he entered the Franciscan Order of the Strict Observance and took the name Brother Leonard. He was ordained a priest in Rome in 1703. Although he hoped to serve as a missionary in China, a serious bleeding ulcer prevented him from traveling. He spent four years recovering in his hometown while rebuilding his strength.

In 1709, Saint Leonard was assigned to Florence, where he quickly became known as a powerful and gifted preacher. His reputation grew, and he was invited to preach throughout the region. His ministry encouraged devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Immaculate Conception, and especially the Stations of the Cross.

One of his greatest achievements was establishing the Stations of the Cross in more than 500 places, including the historic Colosseum in Rome. In 1744, Pope Benedict XIV sent him to Corsica to restore order and discipline among religious communities. Although political tensions challenged his mission, he remained committed to preaching and reform.

After returning to Rome worn from his work, Saint Leonard died on November 26, 1751, at the monastery of Saint Bonaventure.

Today, Saint Leonard of Port Maurice remains an inspiring model for Catholics. His life demonstrates deep faith, unwavering perseverance, and a true commitment to building the Kingdom of God through every opportunity given to him.
