Sudan factions still divided as peace plan awaits acceptance

Nairobi: Sudan’s main warring groups have still not agreed to a proposed peace plan backed by the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, raising concern about the future of peace efforts in the country.

US envoy Massad Boulos said that although both sides had shown interest in the plan, neither has formally accepted it. According to him, the Sudanese army responded with conditions that were impossible to include in the agreement. He stressed that the plan must be accepted in its current form without changes.

The Rapid Support Forces, one of the two main armed groups in the conflict, recently announced a three month humanitarian ceasefire. This move came after months of pressure from international governments and aid agencies. However, the Sudanese army rejected the same peace proposal and described it as the weakest plan so far, saying it unfairly favored the RSF.

Reports from the region say clashes continue in several areas despite the RSF’s ceasefire announcement. The army claims it recently stopped an attack near a military base in West Kordofan, raising doubt about whether the truce has any real effect on the ground.

Regional leaders and international diplomats continue to call for both sides to commit to a ceasefire and allow humanitarian aid into the country. The United Arab Emirates has publicly supported the US effort and called for accountability for the violence affecting civilians.

Humanitarian organizations warn that the conflict is still causing widespread suffering, including hunger, displacement and growing insecurity. Without a formal agreement, experts fear the crisis could become even more severe in the coming weeks.

The peace plan remains on the table, but unless both sides agree, the war in Sudan is likely to continue without a clear end in sight.
