Supporters protest outside Adiala Jail after rumours claim Imran Khan has died in custody

Rawalpindi: A large crowd gathered outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on Tuesday after widespread rumours on social media claimed that former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had died while in prison. The claims spread rapidly across platforms such as X and WhatsApp and triggered anger, fear and confusion among his supporters.

Despite the growing unrest, authorities have not issued any statement confirming the rumour. No official update has been provided on Khan’s physical condition, which has added to public anxiety and allowed the speculation to continue circulating.

Witnesses say thousands of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf supporters stood outside the prison gates demanding that officials show proof that Khan is alive. Many shouted slogans comparing the silence of authorities to an attempt to hide the truth. Some supporters carried placards accusing the government of mistreating Khan and violating his rights.

Tension increased when videos surfaced online showing three of Imran Khan’s sisters attempting to enter the jail to meet him. In the footage they appear to argue with police officers who refused them access. The family later claimed that they were manhandled and prevented from checking on their brother’s wellbeing. They also questioned why no family visit had been allowed and why the government has not published any recent verified footage or medical report.

This is not the first time claims about Khan’s health have spread online. Similar rumours earlier this year suggested he had been poisoned or injured in custody. Those earlier reports were dismissed by officials as false.

However the lack of regular information from the jail and limited access granted to lawyers or relatives continues to raise concerns.

Political observers say the current situation reflects a deep mistrust between the public and state institutions. Analysts warn that without clear and transparent communication the unrest could grow and lead to further protests in other cities.

Imran Khan has been imprisoned since being convicted in multiple legal cases following his removal from office in 2022. His arrest last year led to widespread protests across Pakistan, clashes with police and arrests of hundreds of supporters. Since then his party has repeatedly accused the government of trying to silence him and influencing the legal system.

For now the rumour of Khan’s death remains unverified. No medical statement or official confirmation has been released. His supporters say they will continue their protest outside the prison until authorities provide proof of life or allow his family and legal team to meet him.

The atmosphere in Rawalpindi remains tense as police maintain additional security around the prison. Many fear that if the government continues to remain silent the situation could escalate further.

More updates are expected as officials face growing pressure to break their silence.
