Teen basketball player dies after court accident in Haryana

Rohtak: A 16 year old national level basketball player died after a metal basketball pole collapsed on him during practice in Rohtak Haryana. The accident took place on November 25 at a sports nursery ground in Lakhan Majra village.

The player identified as Hardik Rathi was attempting a dunk when the metal structure suddenly fell. The heavy rim and rusted pole hit his chest and he collapsed on the court. CCTV footage of the incident has been widely shared on social media. He was taken to a nearby hospital but doctors could not save him.

Hardik was a promising athlete who had represented Haryana in national level tournaments. His coaches said he had a bright future in the sport and was preparing for upcoming championships.

After the incident the Haryana Sports Department suspended the district sports officer responsible for supervision of the facility. The sports nursery has been temporarily shut for inspection. Authorities have ordered a safety audit of sports equipment and grounds in the district.

The incident has raised serious concerns about the condition of sports infrastructure in Haryana. Two similar accidents occurred within 48 hours in nearby districts including one case where another teenager died after a hoop collapsed during practice.

Former athletes and sports associations have expressed shock and demanded action to prevent further tragedies. Many families of young athletes have also called for better safety measures and regular maintenance of public sports facilities across the state.

Hardik’s family and community members gathered at his home to mourn the loss. His school friends and teammates said he was passionate about basketball and dreamed of playing for India one day.

Investigations into the incident are continuing and officials say further action will be taken once the inquiry report is completed.
