Signis Africa calls for wider support as continent prepares for first world congress

Kigali: Signis Africa has appealed for stronger support from church leaders, media professionals and partners across the continent as preparations continue for the first ever Signis World Congress to be held in Africa.

The international event is scheduled to take place from August 3 to August 8, 2026 in Kigali, Rwanda, and is expected to bring together around 500 delegates including Catholic media experts, faith based communicators, bishops and representatives from international organizations.

Sister Adelaide Felicitus Ndilu, a member of the Signis Africa leadership team, said the congress is a major milestone for the continent and encouraged African dioceses and communication offices to participate and contribute. She noted that the gathering is not only an opportunity for Africa to host a global Catholic media event for the first time, but also a moment to showcase the region’s culture, creativity and media talent.

Organizers have announced the main theme as digital communication for communion, equity and environmental well being. The discussions will include topics such as artificial intelligence, protection of vulnerable communities, gender equality, care for creation and the role of media in supporting synodality in the church.

Preparations are ongoing and the organizing committee has already approved the official congress logo. Work is also underway to launch the congress website where registration details and participation costs will soon be published.

Signis officials say the congress will help strengthen international collaboration among Catholic media professionals and provide learning opportunities from both technologically advanced regions and emerging communication networks. The event will also include cultural programs and visits to Rwandan historical and environmental sites.

Organizers hope the gathering will deepen unity among Catholic communicators worldwide and inspire new media approaches that promote peace, human dignity and responsible use of technology.

More updates, including registration information, are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
