Priest killed in captivity after one month in Nigeria

Abuja: A priest who was kidnapped in northwest Nigeria last month has been killed by his abductors, according to church officials.

The Anglican priest, Reverend Edwin Achi, was taken from his home in Kaduna state on October 28 along with his wife and daughter. His death was confirmed by the head of the Church of Nigeria, who described the incident as heartbreaking and deeply troubling.

The kidnappers had reportedly demanded a large ransom shortly after the abduction. The amount was later reduced, but the church said negotiations did not lead to his release. The priest’s wife and daughter are still being held, and efforts to secure their freedom are ongoing.

Kidnappings have become increasingly common in northern and central Nigeria, affecting schoolchildren, religious leaders and villagers. Security experts say armed groups operating in the region are using kidnappings for ransom as a major source of funding.

The Nigerian government has recently announced new security measures, including recruiting more police officers, in response to growing criticism and public fear.

Church leaders have called on authorities to act swiftly, both to rescue the remaining hostages and to bring an end to widespread abductions. They also urged communities to remain united and hopeful despite the tragedy.

Reverend Achi’s death has caused widespread sorrow among church members and residents in his community, where he was known for his quiet service and dedication to parish life.

Local officials say investigations are ongoing.
