Pope Leo XIV Urges Christian Unity Ahead of 2033 Jubilee of Redemption

Istanbul: Pope Leo XIV has extended a heartfelt invitation to Christian leaders across traditions to journey together in preparation for the Jubilee of Redemption in 2033, calling for renewed fraternity and shared commitment to the Gospel. The appeal was highlighted in a statement released by the Holy See Press Office following the Pope’s ecumenical engagement in Istanbul.

The Pope’s message came at the conclusion of a significant encounter held at the Syriac Orthodox Church of Mor Ephrem on Saturday. Reflecting on the rich legacy of the Council of Nicaea, the Holy Father linked the early Church’s unifying witness to the modern call for deeper communion among Christians. His remarks followed Friday’s historic commemoration in Iznik, the site of ancient Nicaea, where Christian leaders gathered in remembrance of the council’s foundational role in shaping shared doctrine.

According to the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV expressed both gratitude and hope thanking those present for their fellowship, while assuring prayers for future meetings that might include Churches unable to participate this time. The Holy See Press Office noted that the Pope “asked for and assured his prayers for new moments of encounter,” emphasizing that the path toward unity must welcome every Christian tradition.

In his address, the Pope also underscored the centrality of evangelization and the proclamation of the kerygma, reminding all Christians that their mission begins with announcing the Good News. Persistent divisions, he warned, hinder the credibility of that witness in a world in need of hope and reconciliation.

Calling Churches to “walk together” toward the milestone year of 2033 marking 2,000 years since the redemption brought by Christ Pope Leo XIV reaffirmed his vision of a Jubilee shaped by reconciliation, shared testimony, and renewed unity among all who profess the name of Jesus.
