North Korea leader says air force key to nuclear deterrence

Seoul: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has said the country’s air force will play a major role in strengthening its nuclear deterrence as tensions continue to grow on the Korean peninsula. His comments came during an event marking the 80th anniversary of the Korean Peoples Army Air Force.

State media reported that Kim inspected military equipment during the ceremony, including unmanned aircraft, mobile missile systems and an airborne early warning aircraft. He also said the air force will receive new strategic assets, although he did not explain what types of weapons or technology might be added.

North Korea has been improving its drone technology in recent years and has begun producing short range and medium range combat drones, according to earlier reports. The country has also showcased new missile systems and advanced weapon models in public military events throughout the year.

The anniversary message follows several earlier statements from Kim, who has repeatedly ordered more investment in nuclear weapons and delivery systems. He has described the nuclear program as the nation’s top priority and has warned that North Korea will take additional military measures if it feels threatened.

The ongoing build up has added to concerns among neighboring countries and the United States, especially after North Korea unveiled what it called its most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile during a military parade last month.

There have been no signals from Pyongyang suggesting a change in policy, and analysts believe the country is aiming to strengthen its military posture and send a message to its rivals.
